Plot:- This story is about 3 IIT students Hari, Alok & Ryan. This trio is believe in true friendship, to beat education system & to live fullest. Story start with Hari when he just arrived in IIT for studying Mechanical engineering. There this two fellows Alok & Ryan become roommates, At first night this trio faced ragging by seniors but Ryan showed his strength & saved his two friends. This incident increased bond of friendship. Though all 3 of them have diametrically different views in life, they bond together, and are referred to as Five Pointers after they end up in bottom of the class. The novel gets its title from the GPAsystem used in IIT, to rank students. Students who get five points are considered average, and don’t usually get the choice job offers.
Ryan Oberoi- Son of rich parents, feels lonely and neglected. Hates the grading system at IIT, has his own views on life. Alok Gupta- Comes from a lower middle class family. His father is crippled due to an accident, his mother supports the family as a teacher and he has a sister to be married off. Sentimental and emotional, he is at IIT, only because he can get a good job, and support his family. Hari Kumar- The novel’s protagonist, and the narrator, he acts as a sort of balance between Ryan and Alok. He troubleshoots whenever fights break out, but he himself seems confused in life. Has a problem expressing himself, but at a critical moment finds the strength to speak out. Though all 3 of them have diametrically different views in life, they bond together, and are referred to as Five Pointers after they end up in bottom of the class. They hate the topper Venkat, who they think is more of a robot than a human being. Hari meanwhile gets into a romance with Neha, daughter of the dreaded Professor Cherian, a tyrant on the campus. Neha herself has a painful past reliving memories of her dead brother, Sameer, and a father who is a disciplinarian. In contrast to Prof Cherian, there is the US returned Prof Veera who encourages his students to think in a different way. He becomes the mentor to the 3 friends, and also supports them during a critical time. Hari and Neha come closer, he also finds that their grades are dropping, and so he along with Alok and Ryan hit on a plan to steal the papers. Novel ends with dramatic turn & made huge impact on our trio’s life.

Review:- I love this book. I read this book when I was in 10th grade in Gujarati. I purchased english version when i was in first year of my engineering. I got much more fun in my re-read, I think atmosphere of college life worked there. The characters are wonderfully developed. The descriptions of college life, bunking, roof top booze parties, grading has been done well.
Most of the book deals with the numerous attempts by the trio to cope with and/or beat the system as well as Hari’s fling with Neha who just happens to be the daughter of Prof. Cherian, the domineering head of the Mechanical engineering department of their college. Also the technique where he gives the view points of Alok, Ryan, Neha is well done. The scenes between the friends, their fights, their misunderstanding are depicted in an excellent manner. The romance between Hari and Neha seems straight out of a Bollywood movie. Hari Kumar is the narrator of the story. While he talks about others a lot he doesn’t really talk about himself. Hari lacks confidence and is very bad at vivas. He is dating Neha Cherian, daughter of Professor Cherian. Ryan is rich & creative person, he is good sport person also. He cares a lot for his friends and claims not to love his parents, even though he hints he misses them every now and then. Alok Gupta is a cry baby. His family is poor and he is in IIT for them. His sister is not getting married as he does not have enough dowry to give the groom’s family. In the start of the story he dislikes Ryan as he is always having fun and not studying but, after he comes back after breaking friendship with Ryan and Hari, his perspective about Ryan changes. After one incident they again become trio.

Now I want to talk about movie adaptation of this book. One of my favourite “3 Idiots”.

The movie is staring by Amir khan(Ryan), R. Madhavan(Hari), Sharman Joshi(Alok) & Kareena kapoor(Neha). This movie is one of my best experience of all time. I love the way Rajkumar(director) arrange all settings, the characters, the punches, the chemistry, the massage. Even he choosed perfect actor that fulfilled characters. & Boman Irani( prof. Cherian) his acting is just amazing. Rajkumar also add some extra “masalas” some good punches which are not in book though so perfectly arrange that we have to appreciate his work.

Something is off track:-

This stuff gives us a massage regarding our education mentality. We all faced this & some are already facing it. Our Indian education system is so much associate with money making factors, so they are focusing on grades more than creativity, which is totally wrong mentality. Student just become sandwich between parents &, education system, how he/she can think about his own abilities & dreams. If you will not get admission in IITs or IIMs, your future will flus down in gutur according to our society’s mentality. We are living in 20th century. There are number of possible ways to earn money in this high speed internet world & get even more successful than IIT or IIM person.

This one is amazing fiction creation by Chetan Bhagat, if you haven’t read any book of him yet, this one is good to go.

So, This is my thoughts &, experience regarding this stuff, tell me about your thoughts & experience in comments below.
